Virtual School of Music – Fall 2020

The Manassas Chorale is pleased to offer the “Virtual School of Music!” Classes are open to members of the Chorale and non-members (community or church choir singers or anyone interested in improving their vocal technique), and will be taught by our Artistic Director, Becky Verner, and our Accompanist, Kristina Schenck. (See our About page for more information on these professional musicians.)

  • Chorale members are eligible for all four classes with their paid membership dues (see Handbook for details). You may take as many or as few as you wish.
  • Non-Chorale members are eligible for all four classes for a $40 registration fee. The $40 covers all four classes and you may take as many or as few as you wish.

The deadline for registration is Sunday August 23. Classes will begin on Monday August 24 and run for six weeks. Classes will be provided online via the Zoom platform.

CLICK HERE for more information on Zoom. You do not need a Zoom account to participate.

Singers will receive an emailed link to access the class(es) for which they sign up. Materials will be provided either by email or in-person pick up (arranged on an as-needed basis).

Mondays, 7:00-7:50 PM – Develop More Accurate Pitch/Ear Training with Solfege (Kristina Schenck)

Do you ever feel like you look at the music and you know the note jumps higher, but you don’t know how much higher? In this class we will work on ear training and developing relative pitch through the kinesthetic use of hand signs in conjunction with the solfege (do-re-mi) system.

Mondays, 8:00-8:50 PM – I’d Like to Buy a Vowel (Becky Verner)

When you sing, vowels make the sound, and consonants make the sense. This course will help you make the very best vowel sounds possible with your vocal instrument. You’ll be able to hear the improvement in only six weeks!

Tuesdays, 7:00-7:50 PM – You Can Sight Sing (Becky Verner)

A step-by-step approach to reading notes, intervals and rhythms. This course is for you if you’ve always wished you could read music. Winning the next round of “America’s Got Talent” is not guaranteed!

Tuesdays, 8:00-8:50 PM – Effective Breathing for Better Singing (Kristina Schenck)

Do you ever feel like you can’t sing all the way through a phrase? Do you try to take a quick breath and then find yourself needing more air anyway? Explore breath management and increase your ability to sing with more power and less stress. Learn how to alleviate vocal tension by properly using your instrument while creating a free tone!

Virtual Choir – Fall 2020

The Manassas Chorale is developing a virtual choir opportunity for October-November. Singers will receive the repertoire, practice at home, record themselves singing their part, and submit their audio files. The Chorale will assemble everyone’s files into one video which will be distributed online via Facebook and Youtube as a virtual concert.

Chorale members, and non-Chorale members who participated in the Virtual School of Music, are eligible to participate.

Further details will be provided, including technical requirements and support.
